Yohji Yamamoto: Setting the Bar High for Fashion Connoisseurs

Yohji Yamamoto: Setting the Bar High for Fashion Connoisseurs

For those who have a keen eye for pure fashion artistry, Yohji Yamamoto’s latest collection is a must-see. Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic, the renowned designer managed to deliver a truly breathtaking showcase at Paris Fashion Week. Held at the illustrious Salle des Fêtes of Paris City Hall, the presentation was a striking display of Yamamoto’s unparalleled talent, set against a backdrop of all-black and white ensembles.

Master of draping, Yamamoto skillfully crafted silk and wool pieces on his ethereal models, culminating in a finale that left spectators in awe. With fabrics seemingly exploding off the models’ bodies, thanks to the strategic use of hangers and raw wire crinolines, the show was a visual feast for fashion enthusiasts.

Despite whispers of collaborations with big-name brands like Hublot, Supreme, and Lamborghini circulating around him, Yamamoto remains mysterious and lets his work do the talking. The collection itself featured impeccably tailored coat-dresses and exotic screen goddess gowns that radiated elegance and sophistication.

The bold and daring techniques employed were evident in every piece, with fabrics manipulated into mesmerizing shapes like cacti, irregular leaves, and fierce tentacles. Noteworthy was a dry wool dress cleverly resembling a pair of men’s pants from the front and a flowing bolero from the back. The intricate hairstyles, embellished with black cock feathers, created a sense of exotic ritual, elevated by hairstylist Eugene Souleiman’s artistry.

At 76 years old, Yamamoto’s dedication to his craft is unwavering, as evidenced by his 11-hour flight from Tokyo to Paris for the show. When asked about any hesitations regarding the journey, Yamamoto’s response was a resolute “No, not really. Once I knew there was going to be a season in Paris, I said ‘let’s just do it!'”

In a world filled with uncertainties, Yamamoto’s cocoon-like designs seem particularly poignant. His ability to create fashion that resonates with the human experience, imperfections and all, strikes a chord with audiences worldwide. Each new collection solidifies Yohji Yamamoto’s reputation as the epitome of a designer catering to connoisseurs, showcasing his best work to date.
