White Canvas: LV Trainer in Residence

Starting from this Friday, fashion enthusiasts in Milan will have the opportunity to explore an exhibition that celebrates the artistic reinterpretations of the LV Trainer sneaker, created by the renowned designer Virgil Abloh back in 2018. Entitled “White Canvas: LV Trainer in Residence,” this exhibition showcases the work of three talented artists from the New York underground scene.

Despite Pharrell Williams recently taking over as the head of creative direction at Louis Vuitton, Virgil Abloh’s influence remains prominent within the brand’s projects. Thus, as a tribute to the late designer who passed away in November 2021, Louis Vuitton is unveiling an exhibition that pays homage to one of its most iconic shoe models – the LV Trainer sneakers, despite its relatively young existence.

First introduced by Abloh during his debut men’s runway show for Louis Vuitton, the LV Trainer sneakers combine his passion for basketball with the craftsmanship of one of the world’s most valuable brands in 2022. This collaboration resulted in the creation of a unique and trendy sneaker that has captured the attention of fashion enthusiasts globally.

To bring a fresh perspective to the LV Trainer sneakers, Louis Vuitton has enlisted the expertise of three artists from the “New York underground scene of the 80s.” These artists, who have close ties to both Virgil Abloh and Pharrell Williams, include Lee Quiñones, an expert in Subway Art known for his thought-provoking pieces, Lady Pink, a prominent figure in the hip-hop scene renowned for her graffiti work, and the late Rammellzee, a multifaceted artist known for his representations of the chaos and vibrancy of New York streets.

In addition to the unique reinterpretations by the three artists, the exhibition also features videos documenting the journey of the LV Trainer sneakers and an immersive audiovisual mural. This comprehensive showcase provides visitors with an in-depth look at the creativity and inspiration behind the sneakers.

Louis Vuitton describes this exhibition, held in Milan until March 16th, as a “first edition,” alluding to the potential for future endeavors or reinterpretations of the LV Trainer sneakers. It is worth noting that an augmented reality option is available on the brand’s website, offering a virtual experience for those unable to attend the exhibition in person.

While this exhibition serves as a platform to honor and preserve the legacy of Virgil Abloh, it also aims to captivate a target audience fascinated by sneaker culture through the unique interpretations of renowned artists. Similar to the successful customizations by Yayoi Kusama in previous collaborations with Louis Vuitton, these reinterpretations allow the brand to establish itself within the art world while rejuvenating its collection of iconic products.
