West End footfall increases following relaxation of COVID restrictions

West End footfall has experienced a significant increase since the easing of Plan B Covid restrictions in England. Following the relaxation of rules, footfall in this renowned shopping district, which houses the flagship stores of major fashion retailers, reached 79% of pre-pandemic levels in the first full week. This figure is the highest since November 2021, when concerns about the Omicron variant discouraged shoppers from crowded areas.

From Thursday 27 January to Wednesday 2 February, there was an average increase of 10% in total daily footfall compared to the previous week. Morning commuter footfall, representing individuals who engage in shopping and social activities in the West End during their working day, also saw an average increase of 9%. This suggests that regular visitors to the district are returning.

The New West End Company (NWEC), an organization that represents businesses in the area, reported this positive trend in footfall. Artjom Hatsaturjants, Head of Business Intelligence at NWEC, highlighted the encouraging boost in footfall and the growth in morning commuter footfall. The return of office employees and domestic visitors undoubtedly provides a sense of relief for retailers and hospitality establishments in the West End.

Despite these positive developments, one noticeable absence in footfall is international tourists. Hatsaturjants emphasized the need for united efforts to attract high-spending overseas tourists back to the city. The recovery of London’s businesses from the challenges of the past two years largely depends on the revival of international tourism.

The increase in footfall in London’s West End showcases the positive impact of relaxing restrictions on consumer behavior. As the district continues to recover, it is crucial for businesses to actively work towards attracting international tourists, contributing to the overall revitalization of the city’s economy.
