Wales Bonner Pays Homage to Howard University in Latest Collection

In her latest collection, Wales Bonner pays tribute to the esteemed Howard University, drawing inspiration from her research and experience at the renowned institution in Washington, D.C. Through her designs, the collection seamlessly blends Western tailoring with African and Caribbean culture, showcasing Wales Bonner’s distinctive and signature style.

Founded in 1867 as a seminary for black clergymen, Howard University has produced an exceptional lineup of black American artistic, political, and intellectual leaders throughout its history. From influential governors and senators to cabinet members and Nobel laureates, the university’s graduates form a vital part of the black American elite. Wales Bonner aims to honor and reinterpret this remarkable legacy through her artistic creations.

The Fall/Winter 2024 collection by Wales Bonner represents a culmination of her best work to date. While the looks may appear deceptively simple, they convey a clear vision and purpose. The standout pieces in the collection include a fluid wrap tuxedo suit, showcasing impeccable craftsmanship and a testament to her collaboration with renowned Savile Row tailors, Anderson & Sheppard. Collegiate references also take center stage, with rowing sweaters featuring the ‘Howard Crew’ emblem and houndstooth baseball jackets adorned with a ‘WB’ motif. Additionally, Wales Bonner proudly displays her partnership with Adidas through trefoil logo sweatshirts and new crocodile embossed leather Originals Superstars sneakers. Retailers have reported that the Wales Bonner x Adidas collaboration has resulted in the most sought-after sneakers in the market.

The fashion show itself served as a testament to Wales Bonner’s talent and influence in the industry. Prominent French black talent, including basketball legend Tony Parker and Netflix star Omar Sy, were in attendance, adding to the event’s prestige. The venue, held in an old wing of the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers, added a touch of history and grandeur. The collection showcased technical mastery, with notable pieces such as the innovative safari jacket meets duffle coat ensemble that opened the show, as well as the denim reinterpretation of the Canadian coat. Soulful elements, like Kantha quilt blousons and dusters, added depth and emotion to the designs. The models, styled by Lauren Parsons using flawless Sisley makeup, exuded poise and sophistication.

The show’s highlight came in the form of a surprise rap performance by the renowned singer Yasiin Bey, who joined Wales Bonner on the runway during her bow. Reflecting on her sources of inspiration for the collection, Wales Bonner acknowledged the academic wardrobe and intellectual lineage of Howard University, as well as the influence of hip hop. She was particularly drawn to the convergence of rap music, basketball courts, and sporting attire with smart and practical clothing at Howard. The university’s nickname, “The Mecca,” became a symbol of imagination and inspiration for the designer.

Through her Fall/Winter 2024 collection, Wales Bonner’s homage to Howard University showcases her ability to blend cultures, reinterpret traditions, and create garments that capture a rich heritage. Her collaboration with Adidas and the presence of notable figures at the show further solidify her status as a groundbreaking force in the fashion industry. As she continues to push boundaries and explore new creative territories, Wales Bonner exemplifies how fashion can serve as a powerful medium for storytelling and cultural appreciation.
