W Magazine Acquired by Future Media Group

W Magazine, a well-known fashion publication with a history of nearly 50 years, has recently been acquired by Future Media Group from Condé Nast. This significant deal not only marks the end of Stefano Tonchi’s tenure as the magazine’s editor-in-chief but also signals a new era for the publication under new ownership.

Future Media Group, known for its other media properties including Surface and Watch Journal, has outlined its plans to strengthen W Magazine’s digital presence while maintaining its print editions. With a commitment to producing eight print issues annually, the company aims to keep W offices in major fashion cities like Paris, Milan, New York, and Los Angeles.

During a transitional period, Condé Nast will continue to provide support services to W Magazine, ensuring a smooth transition. Following this phase, the teams from W, Surface, and Watch Journal will merge into one office to foster collaboration and synergy. Amber Estabrook, who currently serves as the VP of revenue at W, will step into the role of chief revenue officer at Future Media Group. Additionally, editor-at-large Lynn Hirschberg will be among the more than 30 employees retained by the magazine.

While there was initial consideration of seeking partners for W Magazine, Stefano Tonchi opted to resign due to differences in vision for the publication’s future. In his place, Sara Moonves, the current style director at W, will take the helm as the first female editor-in-chief in the magazine’s history. With a background that includes roles at major publications like Vogue and T: The New York Times Style Magazine, Moonves is well-equipped to lead W Magazine into a new chapter.

Future Media Group CEO Marc Lotenberg has praised Moonves for her discerning taste and innovative approach, expressing confidence in her ability to guide W Magazine through the evolving media landscape. The acquisition of W Magazine, alongside other titles like Brides and Golf Digest, comes as Condé Nast navigates financial challenges. The magazine’s large subscriber base and strong online presence made it an appealing purchase for Future Media Group.

While specific details of the acquisition have not been disclosed, it is evident that W Magazine is poised for a new beginning under its new ownership. With a focus on digital expansion and editorial creativity, the publication is set to continue its legacy as a prominent voice in the fashion industry.
