The upcoming film about the life of Gianni Versace, the renowned fashion designer and creator of the Versace brand, will star Antonio Banderas in the lead role. Versace, born in 1946 in Reggio de Calabre, Italy, founded his luxury brand in Milan in 1978 after finding success with collections for the ready-to-wear brand Genny. However, his life was tragically cut short when he was assassinated in 1997 at the age of 50 by Andrew Cunanan on the steps of his Miami home.
Following his death, Versace’s brother Santo Versace and Jorge Saud took over the reins of the fashion house, while his sister Donatella Versace became the creative director. Though the film about Gianni Versace’s life will soon be in production, the family has made it clear that they do not support or wish to be associated with the project. They have stated that the film, which will feature Antonio Banderas, should be seen as a work of fiction.
Despite the family’s lack of involvement, the film will be directed by Bill August and filming is set to begin in December 2016 in Milan. There are even reports that scenes will be shot on the lands of Gianni Versace in Reggio Calabria, as well as in Miami. Donatella Versace, in her tribute to her late brother on the anniversary of his death, reminded the world of his immense talent and the impact he had on the fashion industry.
In 2015, director Matthew Miele released a documentary called “Crazy about Tiffany’s,” which delved into the history of the renowned Tiffany & Co. brand. The success of this film suggests that there is a strong interest in the stories behind well-known luxury brands like Versace.
