LVMH, the prestigious French luxury conglomerate led by billionaire Bernard Arnault, is facing the potential abandonment of its ambitious Beverly Hills hotel venture. In response to the growing opposition from residents, LVMH has announced its intention to halt the plans for a Cheval Blanc hotel at the northern end of Rodeo Drive if it fails to garner support in the city’s special election. The likelihood of an unfavorable outcome is becoming increasingly apparent.
Challenges Faced and Community Support
Recent vote counts indicate that a majority of residents oppose the construction of the proposed 115-key hotel. The ballot involved critical questions, including the approval of the zoning amendment for the hotel’s construction (Measure B) and the development agreement (Measure C). LVMH spokesperson Jessica Miller acknowledged that while there are still votes to be counted, it appears that both measures have fallen short of the required margin, effectively overturning the extensive review and approval process. Miller expressed pride in the collaboration with residents, civic leaders, and business owners who supported the venture, highlighting the significant city funding and the potential for a transformative project in the Golden Triangle.
The Hotel Project and Community Concerns
The hotel project has been LVMH’s focus for nearly three years, with plans to replace multiple buildings at the intersection of Rodeo, Santa Monica Boulevard, and North Beverly Drive. Designed by architect Peter Marino, the proposed nine-story boutique hotel would have included a private members club and a restaurant, aiming to elevate the area’s appeal and charm.
While the Beverly Hills City Council initially approved the project, concerns emerged among certain residents. Obstruction of views and potential traffic congestion were among the issues raised by locals. The union representing hospitality workers, Unite Here Local 11, also voiced objections during the planning stages, advocating for affordable housing zoning to be incorporated into the development.
The Fate of the Project
The opposition successfully gathered enough signatures to prompt a referendum on the hotel project. The special election, which concluded on May 23 with the participation of Beverly Hills’ 22,000 registered voters, will determine the project’s fate. The final results are set to be officially certified on June 2. LVMH spokesperson Jessica Miller stated that if the final vote count confirms the rejection of the project, LVMH will respect the outcome and not pursue any future iterations of the hotel project. The decision will mark a significant turning point for LVMH and the Beverly Hills community as they await the final verdict on this ambitious endeavor.
