ULTIMZ Journal Luxury & Sustainability: Regenerative Conversation

ULTIMZ Journal is providing an exclusive focus on the latest Special Edition titled “Luxury & Sustainability: Regenerative Conversation.” One notable feature of this edition is an intriguing interview conducted with Hélène Valade, the Director of Environmental Development at LVMH Group.

During the interview, Valade shares her vision of regenerative luxury and the ambitions that this concept reflects. She explains that regenerative luxury goes beyond just borrowing from nature and instead focuses on giving back more to the environment. The key to achieving this is through establishing a harmonious relationship between nature and creativity, where ecosystems are seen as allies rather than dominants. Valade emphasizes the need for a revolution in both cultural representations and innovation to embark on the path of regenerative luxury.

In terms of innovation, LVMH is exploring new working techniques with micro-organisms in collaboration with Fendi and Central Saint Martins. They are also partnering with Imperial College London to produce laboratory-grown keratin, which can be used for sustainable materials such as wool, silk, cashmere, and fur. Additionally, Toshi, a start-up that won the LVMH Innovation Award, focuses on bringing environmental sustainability to luxury home delivery.

A key objective for LVMH is to implement the four action plans of the LIFE 360 program – Creative Circular Economy, Traceability, Biodiversity, and Climate – within their Houses. Circular economy and biodiversity are of particular focus for the group.

In response to a question about the environmental impact of Web3 and the role of blockchain, Valade highlights LVMH’s commitment to green e-commerce. The challenge lies in considering the digital footprint in all aspects of the customer experience. Valade emphasizes the importance of evaluating the energy consumption of e-commerce sites and identifying areas that need improvement.

Valade acknowledges that the digital economy contributes significantly to energy consumption but emphasizes the need for accurate measurement to make informed decisions. Blockchain technology, specifically LVMH’s use of the Aura blockchain developed by Consensys and Microsoft, helps enhance traceability and accountability. Aura aims to be carbon neutral by 2025, and as a private blockchain with specific purposes, its environmental impact is limited.
