UK Shopping Centres Achieve Net Zero Carbon – Operational Energy Status

In a groundbreaking accomplishment for sustainability in the retail sector, two shopping centres in the UK have become the first to attain “Net Zero Carbon – Operational Energy” status. Quayside MediaCity in Salford and Gloucester Quays have successfully met the criteria established by the UK Green Building Council’s (UKGBC) Net Zero Carbon Buildings Framework.

These shopping centres are part of the property company Peel L&P’s portfolio, which has been actively working to reduce carbon emissions across its assets. By achieving net zero carbon status, Peel L&P has showcased its commitment to climate resilience and its dedication to implementing sustainable initiatives throughout its properties.

Peel L&P has undertaken several measures to reach this significant milestone. In 2021, a large number of its site assets transitioned to a 100% renewable electricity tariff sourced from wind farms. Furthermore, energy efficiency programs have been implemented within the retail outlets, including lighting system upgrades throughout all spaces. These initiatives have not only helped decrease carbon emissions but have also resulted in substantial energy savings.

Jo Holden, Peel L&P’s Sustainability and ESG Director, emphasized the importance of this accomplishment, stating, “To achieve net zero carbon with two prominent retail destinations is a first in the UK and demonstrates our commitment to reducing carbon emissions across our portfolio.” Holden also emphasized the company’s aspiration to further enhance the resilience of its properties in the face of climate change. By the end of 2022, 18 buildings, including the two key retail centres, had been verified to have achieved net zero carbon status.

Peel L&P’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions aligns with its five-year sustainability plan, which supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In 2022, the company unveiled its Climate Positive Plan, pledging to remove more greenhouse gases from the atmosphere than it produces by 2030. This ambitious goal reflects Peel L&P’s dedication to combating climate change and creating a more sustainable future.

The attainment of net zero carbon status by Quayside MediaCity and Gloucester Quays sets a remarkable precedent for the retail industry. It highlights the potential for shopping centres and other commercial developments to play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and contributing to a more sustainable built environment. As businesses worldwide prioritize sustainability, these two UK shopping centres serve as inspiring examples of what can be accomplished when sustainability becomes a core focus.
