UK Shoppers Remain Committed to Ethical Shopping Despite Cost-of-Living Crisis

In the face of a cost-of-living crisis, UK shoppers are undeterred in their commitment to ethical shopping. eBay for Change’s latest research reveals that consumers are increasingly prioritizing sustainability when making purchasing decisions.

The study found that a whopping 65% of shoppers now consider sustainability before buying a product, underscoring the growing importance of ethical shopping. More than half of UK shoppers admit to feeling guilty when purchasing items from brands that lack sustainability or ethical practices. Additionally, 57% of consumers prioritize the ethical practices of a business before making a purchase.

Interestingly, the report indicates that 40% of shoppers now primarily or partially buy from brands that contribute to society or the planet. This signifies a significant shift in consumer behavior, as individuals now actively seek out businesses that align with their own values.

eBay for Change’s Shop for Change Report, based on a survey of over 2,000 consumers, further reinforces the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on shopping habits. About 80% of UK consumers admitted that the crisis has influenced their shopping behavior. Currently, 60% of consumers assert that price is the most crucial factor when making a purchase.

Despite the challenges posed by the cost-of-living crisis, 50% of consumers continue to prioritize ethical and sustainable shopping. They express a desire to support brands that actively prioritize these values and commit to shopping from them more frequently. Moreover, consumers believe that their buying power can bring about positive change, with 45% expressing this sentiment.

Interestingly, 40% of shoppers believe that purchasing from a “social enterprise” can do as much or even more good than donating to a charity. This belief is particularly strong among Gen Z and millennial consumers, who are increasingly aware of the impact their purchases can have.

The report also highlights that more than half of shoppers are more inclined to buy from a brand that supports a cause they care about deeply. The top cause that would sway consumers towards supporting a social enterprise is reducing plastic pollution, followed by protecting the oceans and preserving animals’ natural habitats.

Chris Gale, head of social impact at eBay UK, stresses the significance of assisting shoppers in acting upon their desire to shop for both value and values. It is crucial for businesses and marketplaces to eliminate any obstacles that consumers may encounter while trying to make ethical and sustainable shopping choices.

The research clearly demonstrates that ethical and sustainable shopping remains a top priority for UK consumers, even during the current cost-of-living crisis. As the demand for eco-friendly and socially responsible products continues to grow, businesses have a unique opportunity to align their practices with consumer values and make a positive impact on society and the planet.
