UK Retailers Oppose Government’s Proposal of Covid Status Certificates

UK retailers are joining the hospitality sector and other businesses in expressing their opposition to the government’s proposal of Covid status certificates. As non-essential retailers in England and Wales gear up to reopen, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and the New West End Company (NWEC) have raised concerns about the practicality of implementing certification checks.

Helen Dickinson, CEO of the BRC, stressed that while Covid status certificates may be relevant for international travel, they are not suitable for retail settings. Dickinson pointed out that requiring customers to show their Covid status upon entry could hinder the spontaneity of shopping and potentially decrease demand. She also questioned the necessity of such certificates when retailers have already implemented extensive hygiene measures to ensure the safety of shoppers and staff.

Jace Tyrrell, chief of NWEC, echoed Dickinson’s concerns and emphasized that Covid status certificates may be more applicable for venues with larger capacities and crowds, rather than shops. Tyrrell emphasized the need to revive London’s economy and expressed worries that implementing this proposal would hinder progress.

Andrew Goodacre, CEO of the British Independent Retailers Association, highlighted the burden that certification checks would place on small, independent retailers who may not have the resources to afford additional security staff. There is also uncertainty surrounding whether the plan to introduce certification would pass through Parliament, as the Labour Party, SNP, and over 40 Conservative MPs have expressed reservations about the idea.

The collective opposition from retailers underscores the challenges and impracticalities associated with implementing Covid status certificates in the retail sector. Retailers argue that such certificates are unnecessary and could hamper the economic recovery of the industry. As the retail sector prepares to reopen amidst ongoing uncertainties, it is crucial for the government to consider alternative strategies that prioritize public health while also supporting the viability of retail businesses.
