UK Retail Shopper Numbers Struggle to Reach Pre-Pandemic Levels

The latest data from Springboard reveals that UK retail shopper numbers are still struggling to reach pre-pandemic levels. The research shows that footfall across all retail destinations in the UK only saw a slight increase of 0.8% last week compared to the previous week. This small rise was partly attributed to the sunny weather, which enticed more people to leave their homes and explore.

Despite the overall uptick, footfall on UK high streets actually decreased by 0.5%. On the other hand, there was a modest increase in shopping centres, with footfall rising by 2.4%, and a 1.9% uptick in retail parks. The warmer weather seemed to draw more individuals to shopping centres, offering a reprieve from the scorching heat.

When looking at year-on-year data, footfall at all UK destinations was down by a substantial 32.5% in the week leading up to August 15. This indicates the continuing struggle of the UK retail sector as it strives to recover from the pandemic’s aftermath.

Interestingly, recent reports show that footfall in London’s West End remains 63% lower compared to the same period last year, despite non-essential shops reopening two months ago. The ongoing challenges faced by the upscale shopping district have prompted concerns of potential job losses and revenue declines by the New West End Company.

On a more positive note, there was a 10% increase in footfall in Central London following the government’s call for office workers to return on August 1. While the situation remains challenging, there are signs of gradual improvement in the retail landscape as businesses adapt to the new norms.

Despite the obstacles, there is a glimmer of hope in the retail sector. Recent observations in London’s West End by Fashion Network noted that the sunnier weather had a positive impact on footfall. Although many establishments remained closed, the rise in foot traffic from the previous sunny weekend signals consumers’ eagerness to return to shopping in favorable conditions. With ongoing efforts to adjust and innovate, the UK retail industry can work towards recovery and revitalization post-lockdown.
