According to fashion search engine Stylight, oversized trench coats, bomber jackets, faux fur, and quilting are set to be the top coat trends for the AW21 season. Despite the cold weather not yet hitting most markets, these items have already seen a significant rise in clicks, with the jackets and coats category experiencing a 163% increase compared to the previous year. This can be attributed to the anticipation of a more active autumn and winter season, where consumers will be able to go out and about, unlike the previous year.

Stylight’s trend report highlights the popularity of oversized trench coats, with a 30% increase in clicks year-on-year. The focus is on larger proportions, with oversized cuts and lapels matching the overall look of the coats. Bomber jackets are also making a statement, particularly in oversized styles. This trend has been embraced by influencers and seen on fashion runways, resulting in a 33% increase in clicks.

Quilted coats are also in the spotlight, experiencing a 40% increase in clicks. Inspired by Max Mara’s runway version, this trend reflects consumers’ desire for comfort and coziness, even after the pandemic. Finally, long synthetic fur coats have seen a 26% increase in clicks year-on-year. Brands like Prada, Bottega Veneta, and Stella McCartney have led the way in offering faux fur options, catering to the growing ethical sensitivity of consumers.

Alongside these key trends, Stylight has identified other factors shaping the outerwear market. There is a fondness for green outerwear, with an 11% increase in clicks on knee-length coats. Thin belts have also surged in popularity, with a 37% increase in clicks. Coats with barely-there belts have emerged as a hit on the runways.

As the AW21 season approaches, it’s evident that oversized styles, faux fur, and quilting will dominate the coat trends.
