Thebe Magugu Exhibits ‘Porte-Bonheurs’ at Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche

The winner of the prestigious 2019 LVMH Prize, Thebe Magugu, is set to showcase his captivating exhibition titled “Porte-Bonheurs” at the renowned Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche from August 28th. This highly anticipated exhibition will highlight the enchanting combination of flowers and solidarity.

Building on previous themes of punk culture in 2019 and the influence of Belgium last year, Le Bon Marché has invited designer Thebe Magugu to curate an unforgettable experience. The exhibition is envisioned as an explosion of vibrant colors, with an impressive 20,000 flowers suspended throughout the store to create a stunning vertical garden wall. This kaleidoscope of colors aims to evoke positive emotions of resilience, beauty, and hope, as expressed by the designer. In a recent interview with Le Bon Marché’s Grande Epicerie, Thebe Magugu shared, “I rarely fear because I always feel protected by a higher power, mainly my ancestors.” This profound spiritual connection serves as the inspiration behind the event’s name, “Porte-Bonheurs,” where every flower symbolizes a lucky charm.

Thebe Magugu, proud of his South African heritage, wanted to infuse deeper meaning into the exhibition beyond its aesthetics. To achieve this, he partnered with the charitable association Dessine L’Espoir, which supports disadvantaged and vulnerable African populations. The meticulous craftsmanship behind the exhibition comes to life through the efforts of 120 women from the organization who have hand-sewn all 20,000 flowers. This collaboration beautifully intertwines the essence of South Africa and France, two countries that hold significant significance in Thebe Magugu’s personal and creative journey.

This exhibition not only expresses Thebe Magugu’s appreciation for his cultural heritage but also his unwavering commitment to feminism. He emphasizes how the immersive experience was brought to life by empowered women who have reclaimed their production ownership through this project. Visitors will have the opportunity to purchase each handcrafted flower, with all proceeds going directly to Dessine L’Espoir. Frédéric Bodenes, the Director of Image and Artistic Director of Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche, shared, “Through this exhibition, we hope to raise awareness among our customers for this cause and contribute, in our own way, to help these populations.”

At just 26 years old, Thebe Magugu made history as the first African recipient of the prestigious LVMH Prize in 2019. The launch of his eponymous label in 2015 propelled him as a remarkable talent within the fashion industry. Known for his innovative approaches and strong commitments, the designer sets himself apart by incorporating electronic chips into his garments. This allows for transparent information about the production and concept behind each collection. With a deep focus on sustainable practices, ethical production in South Africa, and his role as the founder of Faculty Press, a media outlet, Thebe Magugu epitomizes the new generation of luxury and fashion.
