The Sustainable Equation of Luxury: Insights from Victoire Satto

For the latest edition of Salon du Luxe Paris, which has shifted to an online format, Victoire Satto, co-founder of sustainable fashion and lifestyle media The Good Goods, delves into the sustainable equation of luxury. Satto emphasizes the importance of brand humility, information capacity, and data sharing in the pursuit of sustainability in the fashion industry.

After completing her studies in medicine, Satto developed a keen interest in the human and environmental impact of the fashion industry. She noticed a lack of simplified information on sustainability, causing a disconnect between the aspirations of younger generations for transparency and the opaque nature of the fashion sector. Feeling that the market was both substantial and dissatisfying, Satto identified a need for a platform that would focus solely on responsible fashion, leading to the birth of The Good Goods.

At the time of its launch, industry professionals had mixed reactions to The Good Goods. Satto recalls that they were “half-curious, half-fearful.” Many companies perceive discussions on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as punitive, fearing criticism and accusations of greenwashing. However, Satto believes that CSR should be seen as an opportunity rather than a problem. She emphasizes the role of the fashion industry in leading the transition towards sustainability and urges brands to embrace CSR as a means of engagement.

Science can play a pivotal role in supporting brands’ sustainability efforts. By leveraging scientific contributions, fashion houses can improve their practices and make them more transparent to consumers. Satto believes that performance indicators, if shared with consumers, can educate and demystify the sustainability of fashion brands. When consumers are well-informed, they are more likely to become brand ambassadors. This approach not only engages consumers but also demonstrates the brand’s humility and its commitment to evolving alongside its consumers.
