The Rise of Vegan Fashion

According to a report by the Vegan Society, there is a growing interest in vegan fashion among Britons. The report, titled “The Rise of Vegan Fashion,” highlights the fact that not only vegans and vegetarians, but the majority of UK consumers want to see more vegan-verified clothing, bags, shoes, and accessories available both in physical stores and online. In a survey conducted as part of the study, a staggering 95% of respondents expressed a desire for more vegan-verified fashion options.

The study also revealed specific preferences within the vegan fashion market. Nearly half of the participants (48%) expressed their desire for more vegan-verified items across all fashion categories. When it comes to specific products, 35% wanted more vegan options for traditionally animal leather-based items such as jackets and boots. Additionally, 32% sought vegan-friendly leather bags and backpacks. There was also a demand for vegan alternatives in footwear, with 32% of respondents hoping for pleather options in boots, heels, and sandals, and 28% expressing interest in trainers made from vegan leather.

The survey shed light on consumer attitudes towards animal-based materials in fashion as well. A majority of 61% considered fur use to be cruel, while 57% shared the same sentiment regarding the use of leather from “exotic” animals. Interestingly, 37% of respondents believed that even cow leather was cruel, with 54% disagreeing with the use of calf leather.

The global vegan women’s fashion market has been experiencing significant growth in recent years. In 2019, its value reached a staggering $396.9 billion, with footwear accounting for 41.3% of this figure. The revenue in the vegan fashion market is projected to reach an astonishing $1,095.6 billion by 2027.

Despite the growth of the market, the development of vegan leather products has faced challenges, primarily related to the quality of available materials. Fashion designer Stella McCartney has noted that, until recently, many vegan leather options were unsuitable for clothing or fashion shoes. However, advancements have been made in the development of softer and more supple vegan leathers, which will cater to the demands of the 35% of survey respondents who desire more vegan leather options. It is interesting to note that 74% of those participants indicated their willingness to pay more for plant-based leather compared to animal leather, while 55% already own or are interested in purchasing items made from plant-based leather. The appeal of vegan leather lies in its ethical and sustainable qualities, as expressed by many respondents. In addition, a significant portion (31%) view vegan leather as “modern.”

Overall, the rise of vegan fashion in the UK reflects a larger trend towards more ethical and sustainable consumption habits. With an increasing number of consumers embracing veganism and demanding cruelty-free alternatives, it is clear that the fashion industry needs to adapt and meet these changing preferences.
