The Reporter: Promoting Diversity and Inclusion in the Fashion Industry

The (Fashion) Minority Report has recently launched its very first newspaper, called The Reporter, during London Fashion Week. This annual publication, available in both print and digital formats, serves as a catalyst for discussions surrounding equity, inclusion, and culture within the fashion industry. By amplifying conversations about diversity and inclusivity in the creative sectors, The Reporter aims to generate measurable changes for historically marginalized voices.

In its debut issue, The Reporter presents a trend report for 2023 focusing on diversity and inclusion. It includes case studies from influential brands like Farfetch, which delves into strategies for promoting diversity within the company, and ASOS, which shares its initiatives aimed at supporting emerging talent. The report also features Schuh, highlighting the changes the brand is implementing to better cater to the needs of disabled customers.

On the cover of The Reporter is Susanah Lau, also known as Susie Bubble, who shares her thoughts on “breaking the wall.” Alongside contributions from industry icons, the newspaper incorporates data from a recent survey of 187 fashion professionals. The survey reveals various insights, including the fact that 10% of respondents secured their positions through connections, primarily made up of white individuals. Moreover, 36% of respondents obtained their jobs through family or friends within the same company, while 32% had connections to someone in a senior role at the company they applied to. Additionally, 22% of respondents had connections who shared their CV through their professional networks. The survey also exposes that 51% of industry professionals believe the fashion industry is not progressing satisfactorily in terms of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Daniel Peters, the founder of The (Fashion) Minority Report, emphasizes the importance of having representation at all levels of the fashion industry. Peters asserts that achieving a level playing field and accessibility for everyone requires increased awareness and action. The launch of The Reporter aims to shed light on these issues and motivate the fashion industry to comprehensively address them in all aspects and positions within the business.

By providing a platform for diverse voices and sharing insightful case studies, The Reporter hopes to inspire dialogue and drive progress toward a more inclusive and representative fashion industry. Through this initiative, The (Fashion) Minority Report strives to bring about lasting change and dismantle the barriers that hinder underrepresented individuals from thriving in the creative sectors.
