The Maybach Project: Collaboration between Virgil Abloh and Mercedes-Benz

The collaboration between the late American designer, Virgil Abloh, and motor company Mercedes-Benz has reached its pinnacle with the unveiling of their joint Maybach project. In a bid to honor Abloh’s legacy following his untimely passing, his family and Mercedes-Benz showcased a unique vehicle model at the Art Basel international art fair in Miami. This exceptional creation features a six-meter Maybach with Gran Turismo proportions, boasting a transparent hood equipped with solar sensors for electric battery power. Its breathtaking design, combining black and sand-colored tones, is not just limited to the exterior but also extends to the interior of the vehicle.

Initially, this exceptional model was not intended for commercial production. However, the manufacturer has surprised enthusiasts this week by announcing the release of an automobile capsule collection that draws inspiration from this Maybach creation. Limited to just 150 units, the S-Class S680 model incorporates various elements from its larger counterpart, including a striking combination of two-tone colors, Nappa leather upholstery, an embroidered Mercedes-Maybach Virgil Abloh logo, a personalized digital dashboard, and a unique protective cover.

Expressing her thoughts on the collaboration, Bettina Fetzer, Vice President of Communication and Marketing at Mercedes-Benz AG, highlighted the importance of developing marketable elements within this partnership with Abloh. She described it as a “unique and inspiring journey into Mercedes-Benz’s concept of time, co-creation, and contemporary luxury.”

It is worth noting that this limited edition offering comes with a luxurious gift box containing a 1/18 scale replica of the vehicle. Additionally, a clothing collection comprising t-shirts, caps, gloves, sweaters, and pullovers has been created to complement this extraordinary collaboration.

This collaboration further solidifies the bond between the automotive and high fashion worlds, building on Mercedes-Benz’s previous successful partnership with Proenza Schouler.
