The Love of Couture: Artisanship in Fashion Beyond Time

The Love of Couture exhibition made its highly anticipated debut with a lavish opening gala at Victoria Dockside, Hong Kong. Created by entrepreneur Adrian Cheng, this exclusive invitation-only event, titled “The Love of Couture: Artisanship in Fashion Beyond Time,” aims to bridge the gap between the rich traditions of Western Europe and the innovative spirit of the East.

To bring this vision to life, renowned Hong Kong production designer William Chang Suk Ping collaborated with experts from the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A). Known for his visual brilliance in various fields such as visual and costume design, film editing, and production, Chang infused the exhibition with his poetic and romantic style. He designed all the furnishings for the event from scratch, adding an extra layer of significance and attention to detail.

The exhibition itself is a curated showcase featuring historical British and French womenswear pieces from the V&A collection. These twelve carefully selected pieces have never been previously displayed in Hong Kong, adding an element of exclusivity to the event. Additionally, six emerging fashion designers were given the task of drawing inspiration from these exhibits. They carefully analyzed the structure, fabric, function, and craftsmanship of the historical pieces and used them as a foundation to create their own original, contemporary couture works.

Adrian Cheng, the mastermind behind this event, expressed his excitement about collaborating with the V&A and the talented designers. He believes that fashion throughout history serves as a reflection of how traditions, craftsmanship, creativity, and societies have evolved. Cheng’s mission to create a deeper cultural exchange between East and West is fulfilled through this exhibition, providing a platform for the next generation of talent to reinvent and modernize history.

“The Love of Couture” exhibition at K11 Night 2022 serves as a testament to the timeless allure of couture. It proves that fashion can transcend time, cultures, and boundaries. By seamlessly blending the traditions of the past with the innovations of the present, this exhibition showcases the harmonious fusion of creativity from both the East and the West. Adrian Cheng’s dedication to nurturing young talent and fostering cultural exchange shines through in this extraordinary event, making it a must-see for fashion enthusiasts and art lovers alike.
