The Louis Vuitton Malle Courrier Exhibition

The Louis Vuitton Malle Courrier exhibition, which opened a few weeks ago, celebrates the iconic trunk that is deeply connected to the essence of the fashion house. This captivating journey can be explored freely throughout the summer and until early 2024.

Nestled in Asnières-sur-Seine, a charming town northwest of Paris, the Louis Vuitton workshops have been situated there since 1859. This historic location, which also served as the family home of the brand’s founder, plays a dual role as a manufacturing site and a gallery dedicated to preserving and showcasing the exceptional heritage of Louis Vuitton.

After hosting the highly acclaimed exhibition, “200 Malles, 200 Visionaries: The Exhibition,” in honor of Louis Vuitton’s bicentenary, the Maison d’Asnières now presents an extraordinary scenography that focuses on one of its most iconic trunks, the Malle Courrier.

The Malle Courrier, designed in 1858 and patented nine years later, exemplifies the brand’s expertise in crafting luxury travel items. During the 19th century, travel was experiencing a renaissance with the advent of the industrial revolution, the expansion of railway networks, and the advancement of steam navigation. The trunk was ingeniously engineered to adapt to the demands of long-haul journeys, with its flat, lightweight, waterproof, and standardized design, making it ideal for storage and transportation in railway wagons or ship holds during the era when transatlantic and Asian routes were booming.

The exhibition, which coincides with the summer season and the desire to explore and embark on new adventures, showcases never-before-seen creations from Louis Vuitton’s archives, alongside their latest collections. Visitors will have the opportunity to appreciate the intricate functional details of these exquisite pieces, from the meticulously crafted handles, buckles, rivets, locks, to the reinforced corners.

It is important to note that Louis Vuitton has recently honored its heritage as a trunk maker by embarking on a groundbreaking project that merges NFT (non-fungible token) and physical products. The Malle Trésor VIA represents the brand’s first foray into this innovative realm.

If you’re intrigued and eager to experience the Louis Vuitton Exhibition – The Malle Courrier for yourself, it is located at 18 rue Louis Vuitton, Asnières-sur-Seine. The exhibition will run until February 17, 2024, and is open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10 am to 5 pm. Admission is free, but reservations are required and can be made on the dedicated page.
