The Invisible Seam: Unsung Stories of Black Culture and Fashion

Tommy Hilfiger, a renowned fashion brand, is preparing to unveil an exciting new podcast series called ‘The Invisible Seam: Unsung Stories of Black Culture and Fashion.’ The series aims to bring attention to the often overlooked contributions of Black culture and communities in the fashion industry, expanding the narrative to reflect their immense value.

The five-part podcast will feature interviews with a diverse range of expert guests, including designers, academics, fashion historians, museum curators, stylists, and artists. Highly respected individuals such as Jeffrey Banks and Romeo Hunte, fashion historian Darnell-Jamal Lisby, image architect Law Roach, and celebrity stylist Ade Samuel will lend their voices to the series. The finale episode will showcase an interview with Zairion Lester, an emerging designer and fashion student known for his innovative perspective.

Tommy Hilfiger recognizes the significance of acknowledging and celebrating the Black contributions to modern fashion and culture. The brand expressed its commitment to creating an equitable future for BIPOC creatives, emphasizing the importance of including different voices in the industry. By collaborating with experts and notable figures in fashion, the brand takes a necessary step towards achieving its goal.

Heading the podcast as the host is Kimberly Jenkins, a consultant and Assistant Professor of Fashion Studies at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. Jenkins also serves as the Founder and Lead Researcher of The Fashion and Race Database, bringing her expertise and dedication to diversity and inclusion in the fashion industry to the series. Episodes will be released on a weekly basis starting from April 20, with the final episode airing on May 18.

The partnership between Tommy Hilfiger and The Fashion and Race Database is seen as a significant milestone in promoting a more diverse and socially responsible fashion system. Jenkins applauds Tommy Hilfiger’s willingness to listen and collaborate with organizations striving for diversity in the industry. She hopes that other fashion brands will be inspired to follow suit and prioritize inclusivity.

‘The Invisible Seam: Unsung Stories of Black Culture and Fashion’ is a result of Tommy Hilfiger’s People’s Place Program, which was launched in July 2020. This program aims to amplify the brand’s efforts in increasing opportunities and visibility for underrepresented communities in the global fashion and apparel industries. Tommy Hilfiger’s proactive steps, including partnerships with The Fashion and Race Database and Audacy’s Pineapple Street Studios, contribute to a more inclusive and equitable fashion landscape.
