The Fur Free Britain Campaign Gains Momentum

The Fur Free Britain campaign has gained significant momentum in the UK, with support from over 50 British celebrities and renowned fashion designers. However, the government’s plan to ban fur imports may be abandoned due to opposition from some cabinet ministers who argue for consumer choice.

While the ban on fur farming has been in place for many years in the UK, the country still imports fur from abroad, amounting to over £800 million in the past two decades. Animal rights campaigners have expressed frustration over the continuation of fur imports, especially when some of the fur is produced under worse conditions than those previously seen in the UK industry.

The proposed ban on fur imports was part of the Animals Abroad Bill, which has faced delays and debates regarding its enforcement. Jacob Rees-Mogg, the Brexit Opportunities Minister, is among those who have objected to the limitations on consumer choice. However, this stance seems to go against current consumer trends, as a Yonder poll conducted last year revealed that 93% of Britons are unwilling to wear fur and 72% support a ban on fur sales.

Claire Bass, the executive director for Humane Society International/UK, highlighted the desire of the British public for a fur ban and emphasized the support of over 140 Members of Parliament from all parties who believe that the UK should not be complicit in the suffering of animals for fashion. Bass called for the release of the results of last year’s government inquiry on the fur trade, arguing that this evidence should shape government policy rather than the personal preferences of a small group of influential Conservatives.

The support for the Fur Free Britain campaign extends beyond celebrities and designers. More fashion brands, including Dolce & Gabbana, have renounced the use of fur in their collections, reflecting the growing momentum against fur in the industry.
