The Fashion DEI Census: A Comprehensive Review of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the UK Fashion Industry

In a groundbreaking collaboration, the British Fashion Council (BFC) has teamed up with The Outsiders Perspective and the (Fashion) Minority Report to introduce “The Fashion DEI Census.” This comprehensive review aims to address the lack of diversity, equity, and inclusion (D, E & I) data in the UK fashion industry. The trio is urging for immediate collective action to rectify the existing imbalances.

The Fashion DEI Census is an industry-wide survey that marks the first attempt to audit the demographics of the UK fashion industry. By examining the current state of D, E & I practices and the implementation of relevant commitments and strategies, this census seeks to overcome the challenge of limited data reporting that hinders the tracking of progress.

According to the BFC, gaining data insights into the key demographics of the UK fashion industry is not just important, but also urgent. The audit is long overdue and represents the initial step towards assessing the industry’s journey in achieving fair representation. Furthermore, it will provide valuable insights into whether the industry genuinely reflects the diverse and global communities it both inspires and serves.

Caroline Rush, the CEO of the BFC, acknowledged the pressing need for the fashion industry to address workforce imbalances at all levels. While Rush applauded organizations for engaging in critical reflection, she expressed concern over the alarming data gap that hindered progress monitoring.

So, how exactly will this census work? Through an anonymous, self-declaration survey, the audit aims to gather demographic data from all job roles, functions, and seniorities in the UK fashion industry. Participants will be asked a concise series of questions, taking only five minutes, without revealing personal data or their workplace. The intention is to evaluate the industry as a collective entity rather than measure progress across individual organizations.

The results of this census will contribute to a comprehensive report set to be published later this year as part of a pilot program led by the three collaborating organizations. Their ultimate goal is to formulate a best practice playbook that will enable tangible and measurable progress in the future.
