The Cult Motif of Marine Serre’s Crescent Moon Print

The film Black is King, released on Disney+, has brought significant attention to the cult motif created by French designer Marine Serre. Co-directed by Beyoncé, the 85-minute film features a music video-style sequence, “Already,” in which Beyoncé and her dancers are seen donning outfits adorned with small crescent moons, a print designed by Marine Serre. Marine Serre, a talented 28-year-old designer and recipient of the prestigious 2017 LVMH Prize, has gained recognition alongside previous winners like Simon Porte Jacquemus.

With the release of Black is King, searches related to the crescent moon print have skyrocketed by 426% on fashion search engine Lyst within a mere 48 hours. This distinctive motif had already caught attention earlier this year when Beyoncé herself wore it, and it gained further popularity through Kylie Jenner’s promotion on Instagram, followed by Adele’s recent endorsement. As a result of this surge in demand, Marine Serre’s brand has experienced a remarkable weekly growth of 51% since March.

One of Marine Serre’s most sought-after products during the second quarter of 2020 was the double moon-printed face mask created in collaboration with filtration company R-PUR. This limited edition face mask garnered immense popularity, reflecting the designer’s contemporary aesthetic and appeal.

Beyond her fashionable designs, Marine Serre is also admired for her commitment to responsible values. She places great emphasis on the upcycling process and recently introduced a series of ASMR videos to showcase her innovative work in transforming used textiles. Her dedication to sustainable practices resonates with the lunar fashion motif, symbolizing an earthly connection and a down-to-earth creative approach.

As interest in Marine Serre continues to soar, it is evident that her unique designs and responsible ethos have captivated the fashion world. Supporting her work not only aligns with contemporary aesthetics but also reflects a commitment to sustainability.
