The Controversy Surrounding Christian Louboutin’s Peshawari Sandals

The new sandal model for men created by Maison Christian Louboutin has sparked both admiration and controversy. Known as the Luxe version of Peshawari Chappals, these flat sandals feature leather straps in various colors, adorned with studs and sequins. With the brand’s logo stamped on them and a side buckle for added flair, the sandals also sport the signature red sole that Christian Louboutin is famous for.

What sets these sandals apart is their clear inspiration from “Peshawari chappals,” a traditional sandal worn in Pakistan. It is widely speculated that Christian Louboutin drew inspiration for this model during his visit to the country in 2017. However, this nod to Pakistani culture has attracted criticism, with many accusing the brand of cultural appropriation.

Additionally, local media and social media users have raised questions about the name of these sandals – Imran Sandals. Some interpreted it as a political reference to the Pakistani Prime Minister, Imran Khan. However, it was soon revealed that the name was a homage to Imran Qureshi, a painter and friend of Christian Louboutin. Despite the controversy, Imran Qureshi himself praised the luxury house for paying tribute to Pakistani culture, and a section of his online community also viewed it as an opportunity to showcase their culture on the international stage.

It’s worth noting that this is not the first time the Peshawari sandal has sparked debates. In 2014, Paul Smith faced similar criticism when he released a similar model.

Overall, the new sandal model from Christian Louboutin has generated mixed opinions, with some appreciating the blend of different cultures and others criticizing it as cultural appropriation. As discussions continue, it is important to acknowledge and respect diverse perspectives on such matters.
