The Collection of André Leon Talley: A Remarkable Auction of Fashion Icons

Christie’s recently conducted the highly anticipated online sale of The Collection of André Leon Talley, surpassing all expectations and achieving a remarkable success. The collection, belonging to the late fashion journalist and icon, raised over $3.5 million in total. The online sale alone generated an impressive $2,167,704, while the live auction contributed $1,387,827.

The auction was not only a celebration of Talley’s impeccable taste and contribution to the fashion world but also a charitable endeavor. All proceeds from the event will benefit two esteemed institutions, namely the Abyssinian Baptist Church in the City of New York and the Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Durham.

Several notable items stood out in the live auction, including an Andy Warhol painting that fetched an astounding $94,500. Additionally, a set of three Personalized Brown “ALT” Monogram Lacquered Canvas Suitcases by Louis Vuitton sold for the same amount. Other standout pieces included a Navy Wool Deconstructed Greatcoat by Christian Dior, which went for $40,320, and a captivating Brick Red “Sleeping Bag” Clutch Coat from Norma Kamali, selling for $25,200.

The online sale also boasted impressive results, with a Bradley Theodore Portrait of Diana Vreeland exceeding its low estimate by selling for $40,320. Other noteworthy sales from the online auction include a Black and Aubergine Silk Satin ‘Climate Revolution’ Cloak by Vivienne Westwood, which found a buyer at $32,760, and an Antonio Lopez Sketch of Diana Vreeland, Paloma Picasso, and André Leon Talley, selling for $25,200.

Elizabeth Seigel, Christie’s Head of Private and Iconic Collections, expressed immense pride in overseeing the two auctions. She acknowledged the significant impact Talley made in the fashion world and beyond, attributing the success of the auctions to his impeccable taste. Seigel also noted the inclusion of numerous new bidders and buyers, as well as institutions, which further solidified Talley’s reputation and the desirability of his collection.

André Leon Talley, renowned for his influential role as a Vogue editor and fashion insider, sadly passed away last year at the age of 73 due to complications from a heart attack and Covid-19. He had an impressive career working for prestigious publications and institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute under Diana Vreeland, Interview Magazine, Women’s Wear Daily, The New York Times, and Vogue. Talley held various positions at Vogue, collaborating closely with editor Anna Wintour for several decades.

The auction presented a unique opportunity for fashion enthusiasts to acquire pieces curated by one of the industry’s most influential figures. The success of The Collection of André Leon Talley not only reflects his extraordinary taste but also highlights the enduring legacy he leaves behind in the fashion world.
