The British Fashion Council Teams Up with UN to Recognize Sustainable Fashion Leaders

The British Fashion Council and Fashion Awards have teamed up with the United Nations Office for Partnerships (UNOP) to highlight and commend individuals and businesses in the fashion industry who are actively contributing to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The prestigious Award for Positive Change, previously presented to iconic designer Vivienne Westwood, will now shine a spotlight on those making strides towards sustainability within the fashion world.

This year, the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action will be recognized at the COP25 event in Madrid, Spain. This groundbreaking initiative brings together top fashion brands like Kering, Inditex, and Burberry, who have pledged to incorporate the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals into their business practices. The aim of this charter is to encourage collaboration among different industries to combat climate change collectively.

The collaboration between the British Fashion Council and UNOP will continue to honor and celebrate individuals and companies who are leading the charge for positive change aligned with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Caroline Rush, the BFC’s chief executive, stressed the importance of backing initiatives like the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action and working together to find solutions for climate-related issues.

Robert Skinner, the executive director of the United Nations Office for Partnerships, highlighted the significance of harnessing the creativity and talent of the fashion industry to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The acknowledgment of the Fashion Industry Charter as the premier recipient of the Award for Positive Change indicates a crucial step towards mobilizing the fashion sector in support of SDG13 – Climate Action.

The Fashion Awards will also be advocating for the Sustainable Development Goals through the #TOGETHERBAND campaign, a partnership between sustainable accessories brand Bottletop, the UN Foundation, and UBS. This collaboration between fashion, the UN, and sustainability leaders signifies a significant shift towards a more sustainable and responsible future for the industry.
