Swarovski’s Major Restructuring Effort Amid Covid-19 Challenges

Swarovski, the iconic Austrian crystalware company, is currently in the midst of a major restructuring effort in response to the unprecedented challenges brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. The decision to eliminate 6,000 jobs, representing over 20% of Swarovski’s workforce, and to close a number of stores is seen as the most significant transformation in the company’s 125-year history.

The primary objective of this restructuring initiative is to realign Swarovski’s operations with a new vision and growth strategy, necessitating a complete overhaul of existing organizational structures and business models. The company is determined to secure long-term sustainability and enhance its brand strength through these bold and necessary changes. As part of this transformation, Swarovski will be optimizing its distribution network by shutting down “a small portion” of its stores to better align with the new strategic direction.

Despite facing initial opposition from some members of the Swarovski family, CEO Robert Buchbauer was able to rally support from the majority of the group’s shareholders to move forward with his plan. Buchbauer’s vision for the company involves a strategic shift towards offering more exclusive and high-margin products, such as luxury jewelry items like rings and bracelets, rather than focusing on mass-market offerings.

The restructuring process has already led to the difficult decision to lay off 600 employees, with further cuts planned for Swarovski’s facilities in western Tirol. These tough choices are a direct response to the challenging market conditions and increased competitive pressures exacerbated by the ongoing pandemic.

Founded by visionary Daniel Swarovski in 1895, Swarovski currently has a global workforce of 34,500 employees and operates manufacturing facilities in multiple countries. Despite the anticipated decline in sales for this year, Swarovski remains optimistic about its future profitability over the next few years as a result of implementing this comprehensive restructuring plan.
