Surge in Pre-Christmas Discounts in the UK

The United Kingdom is currently witnessing a surge in pre-Christmas discounts, with retailers offering record levels of markdowns to clear out autumn and party season inventory before introducing new products next month. This trend is not limited to physical stores but also extends to online retailers, with discounts of up to 50% being offered well ahead of the traditional clearance period.

According to Deloitte, a prominent business services and research firm, their analysis of 0.8 million products reveals that discounts currently average almost 44%, with a projected increase to 48% by Christmas Eve. This data indicates that consumers can benefit from significant savings on a wide range of products during this festive season.

Although Boxing Day typically signals the beginning of clearance sale season, Deloitte forecasts that the level of discounts will escalate to an average of 52% from December 26 onwards. This gives consumers the opportunity to make informed buying decisions without feeling pressured to make impulse purchases during the holiday period, as the discounts will remain consistent.

One of the factors contributing to the high inventory levels and subsequent markdowns is the relatively milder weather experienced during the autumn/winter season. Consumers have postponed purchasing traditional winter items like boots, knits, and coats, leading to excess stock levels for retailers. As a result, companies like Superdry have issued profit warnings due to this shift in consumer behavior.

Jason Gordon, Deloitte’s lead consumer analytics partner, has highlighted the challenges faced by retailers during this Christmas shopping season. With Christmas falling on a Tuesday, shorter Sunday opening hours, and many people opting to travel during the weekend before Christmas, the final days of trading have become increasingly complex. In response, retailers are expected to ramp up their discounting strategies earlier than usual to clear out excess stock and attract holiday shoppers.
