Succession: Exploring American Luxury and Power Dynamics

In a past life, I had the incredible opportunity to work as a TV series and trends columnist at France Inter, under the guidance of esteemed figure Colombe Schneck. This experience allowed me to delve deep into the world of television, a passion of mine, and explore various trends within the industry. While many have been captivated by the wildly popular Squid Game, I would like to divert our attention to another captivating series that has taken the small screen by storm – Succession.

Succession, created by Jesse Armstrong, has recently premiered its long-awaited third season on October 18th, airing on OCS. What makes this series so exceptional? Its outstanding writing, breakneck pace, and Shakespearean influences are just a few of its notable qualities. Not to mention the diabolical music, stunning production, and the layers of social commentary it offers about the US media landscape. However, it is the lens through which it examines the lives of the ultra-rich Americans and their relationship with luxury that truly fascinates me.

Succession serves as a mirror, providing an incredibly detailed mapping of the world of the wealthy elite and their intimate connection with luxury. It goes beyond a surface-level exploration, spanning across generations and examining the intricate dynamics within this consumer category. One of the most captivating aspects is the fragile truce between conservative old money, embodied by the Republican Roy family inspired by the influential Murdoch family who owns Fox News. On the other side, we have the progressive old money represented by the Pierce family, drawing inspiration from the Sulzbergers, owners of The New York Times. These two factions may despise each other, but they are faced with the necessity of collaboration due to the digital revolution.

Adding to the complexity is the generational clash between the Boomer parents, helmed by the formidable Logan Roy, and their Millennial children, known as the “Dardevil Heirs” – Romulus, Kendal, and Siobhan Roy. These heirs are constantly torn between upholding traditions and carving out their own paths to freedom. Their struggle becomes a fascinating study in the series as they try to navigate the challenging dynamics of their wealthy upbringing.

To further complicate matters, Succession introduces us to the world of “Self Made Men Millionaires” hailing from the technology industry, such as Laurence Yee. Driven by meritocracy and brimming with self-assurance, they develop a deep animosity towards the “Dardevil Heirs” whom they seek to replace. The clash between these tribes brings forth gripping narratives and intriguing character developments.

One theme that emerges prominently within the series is the relationship between these tribes and the concept of luxury and branding. In this world, luxury objects play a vital role in everyday life, yet the notion of pleasure seems to be devoid of its true meaning. This is perfectly captured in an iconic scene from the first episode, where the future son-in-law of Logan Roy proudly presents a Patek Philippe watch, proclaiming, “It’s incredibly accurate. Every time you look at it, it tells you exactly how rich you are.” The significance of luxury in Succession makes it a compelling platform to decipher the complex dynamics surrounding wealth and opulence.

Engaging with Succession is not simply an entertaining experience, but also a stimulating exploration into the key tribes of American luxury. It allows viewers to delve deeper into the intricate layers of this privileged world while provoking thought and reflection. If you are intrigued by the complexities of the ultra-rich and their relationship with luxury, this series is a must-watch.
