Stella McCartney Collaborates with Protein Evolution to Create World’s First Biorecycled Garment

Stella McCartney, the renowned designer known for her dedication to sustainability, has once again made waves in the fashion industry. Her collaboration with Protein Evolution, a biological recycling company, has resulted in the creation of the world’s first garment using their groundbreaking Biopure technology.

The innovative garment in question is a stylish coat, personally designed by McCartney, which draws inspiration from her iconic parachute styles. The coat effortlessly combines sustainable and sporty aesthetics, while showcasing soft, natural tones.

Protein Evolution worked closely with partners in the EU to bring this revolutionary parka to life. They transformed rigid packaging and industrial textile waste into textile-grade polyester. Stella McCartney’s team then spun the polyester into yarn and wove it into new fabric for the coat’s design. This process highlights the potential for textile-to-textile circularity in the fashion industry, offering a new avenue for repurposing and extending the lifespan of fabrics.

Connor Lynn, co-founder and chief business officer of Protein Evolution, expressed his excitement about the impact of this milestone in the industry. The coat not only validates the utility and quality of biorecycled polyester but also provides companies with an alternative to sending their fabrics to landfills or incinerators. By utilizing this innovative technology, the lifespan of materials can be extended indefinitely.

Stella McCartney’s involvement with Protein Evolution goes beyond being an early investor. Collaborative Fund’s climate-focused Collab SOS, in which McCartney and LVMH are involved, led Protein Evolution’s initial fundraising round. McCartney and Protein Evolution also announced a research and development collaboration in 2022. The collaboration aims to repurpose unused polyester fabrics from McCartney’s previous collections into high-quality polyester.

As a fashion designer who despises waste, McCartney is thrilled about her partnership with Protein Evolution. Through her SOS Fund, McCartney was among the first to invest in their pioneering biological recycling technology, which has the potential to transform plastic waste into infinitely recyclable polyester. Over the past year, Protein Evolution has successfully tested and proven their textile-to-textile circular process using unused fabrics from McCartney’s past collections. This has enabled McCartney’s atelier to create beautiful and lightweight parachute parkas made from biologically recycled polyester, displayed at the Stella McCartney Sustainable Market at COP28.

Visitors to COP28 have the unique opportunity to witness this groundbreaking parka firsthand at the Stella McCartney sustainable fashion exhibit until December 12. It serves as a symbol of the progress being made in the fashion industry towards circularity and sustainability. McCartney’s partnership with Protein Evolution is set to inspire further innovation and highlight the potential of biological recycling in transforming the future of fashion.
