Stella McCartney and Protein Evolution Collaborate to Tackle Fashion Industry’s Recycling Challenge

Stella McCartney has recently joined forces with Protein Evolution, a US firm specializing in enzyme-based technology, to tackle one of the fashion industry’s most pressing issues: recycling mixed fibres. The aim of this collaboration is to transform synthetic fabrics and plastic waste into new fibres in a way that is eco-friendly and has low emissions. Ultimately, the goal is to produce fibres that are on par with brand new ones. The focus will primarily be on recycling mixed textile waste, such as polyester and nylon, which has proven to be a challenge for fashion companies striving to improve their sustainability practices.

From 2023 onwards, Protein Evolution will be working on processing leftover polyester and nylon fabrics from Stella McCartney’s collections to create new fibres. In addition to this, McCartney’s suppliers will also be collaborating with the company to explore possible applications for these fibres in clothing, footwear, and other renewable products. Scott Stankey, co-founder and chief technology officer of Protein Evolution, expressed his excitement about partnering with Stella McCartney as it provides them with an opportunity to test their recycling platform in a real-world setting and learn how to seamlessly integrate their technology into existing manufacturing processes.

Protein Evolution claims that the fashion industry is accountable for as much as 10% of global carbon dioxide emissions, surpassing the emissions caused by international flights and shipping combined. Furthermore, the recycling efforts within the industry are found to be lacking, with less than 1% of collected clothing being turned back into new textiles or garments. Stella McCartney highlighted the alarming amount of fast fashion being produced and wasted, emphasizing the crucial need for sustainable solutions. She hopes that by pioneering a new form of polyester made from old materials, significant strides can be made towards a more sustainable future.

The collaboration between Stella McCartney and Protein Evolution represents a significant milestone in the journey towards a circular fashion economy. By specifically addressing the challenge of recycling mixed fibres, this partnership aims to reduce the fashion industry’s environmental impact and promote a more sustainable approach to clothing production. The development of enzyme-based technology also brings hope for a future where waste can be transformed into high-quality fibres, allowing fashion to coexist with a stronger eco-consciousness.
