Sonia Rykiel Brand Acquisition Deadline Extended

The iconic Sonia Rykiel brand is currently in a crucial stage as the deadline for submission of offers to acquire the company has been postponed to July 18. Since the passing of its legendary designer in 2016, the brand has been grappling with financial difficulties and entered receivership in April. The Paris trade court has granted an extension to allow all interested parties to present their proposals before a final decision is made on July 25.

Initially, six to seven offers were expected, but withdrawals from potential buyers have prompted the need for more time to evaluate incoming proposals. Despite setbacks, the Judge remains optimistic about the future of Sonia Rykiel and is open to considering both existing and new offers to ensure the best outcome for the brand and its employees.

With a reported sales figure of €35 million and a net loss of €30 million in 2018, Sonia Rykiel currently employs 133 individuals, with hopes of retaining a significant portion of the workforce through the acquisition process. Two prominent recovery offers have surfaced, each led by experienced individuals with a vision for revitalizing the brand in the ever-evolving fashion industry.

Having previously been under the ownership of Chinese investment fund First Heritage Brands, Sonia Rykiel has seen substantial investments but continues to face challenges in the market. If the brand is successfully acquired, the new owners will need to navigate the demands of appealing to a younger demographic and expanding into the thriving Asian market while staying true to Sonia Rykiel’s distinctive style and heritage.
