Shimmer, High Heels, and the Return to Glamour: Insights from Clearpay’s Black Friday Data

According to recent data from Clearpay, shimmer and high heels were the must-have fashion items during the Black Friday period. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Covid-19 and its potential impact on the holiday season, it appears that consumers have a strong desire for party wear. Clearpay reported a staggering 588% growth in sales of sequinned clothes and accessories compared to last year. Furthermore, high heels also saw a surge in popularity with a 248% increase in sales compared to the previous year.

Clearpay, a buy now, pay later (BNPL) platform, also highlighted that Black Friday witnessed a significant boost in orders for homeware, beauty, and fashion, with year-on-year increases of 170%, 61%, and 35% respectively. This indicates that consumers are not only looking to revamp their wardrobes but also their living spaces. Whether it’s hosting at-home gatherings or venturing out after a year of restrictions, people are eager to add some glamour to their lives.

Last year, the usual interest in shimmer, shine, and high heels during the party season decreased as lockdown measures forced consumers to prioritize comfort over style. Dressy loungewear and slippers became the preferred choices. However, this year, as the prospect of parties, nights out, and family get-togethers becomes a reality once again, consumers are rekindling their love for glamorous outfits. Nevertheless, the duration of this trend remains uncertain due to the emergence of the new Omicron variant and the growing concerns among UK consumers regarding large gatherings.

Clearpay has also noticed a significant shift in the demographics of BNPL usage. It is no longer limited to Gen Z and millennial consumers, as Gen X (41-56 year olds) accounted for a 13% increase in the customer base compared to last year. This highlights the broad appeal of the BNPL model.

Additionally, Clearpay found that the majority of its customers preferred to shop using their mobile devices, with a staggering 92% of consumers utilizing their phones to browse and make Black Friday purchases. This further emphasizes the importance of mobile commerce and urges retailers to optimize their websites for seamless mobile experiences.

As the holiday season approaches, it seems that consumers are eagerly embracing the festivities with a touch of sparkle and style. Shimmering sequins and high heels are making a comeback, signaling a return to glamour after a year of subdued celebrations. Whether it’s Gatsby-inspired parties or intimate gatherings, individuals who are fashion-conscious are ready to shine brightly during this festive period.
