Shanghai Fashion Week, known as one of the premier fashion events in Asia, has been postponed due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Originally scheduled to take place from 25 March to 3 April, the event will now be held from 6 to 13 April. This decision was made in response to the recent increase in Covid-19 cases in Shanghai, particularly in the Huangpu district, which is the central neighborhood where the fashion week is usually held.
Authorities in Shanghai have designated the area as a “medium risk zone” due to the spike in Covid-19 cases. Although officials have reassured the public that the situation is currently under control in the city and that the Spring Festival celebrations will continue as planned, the organizers of Shanghai Fashion Week have decided to err on the side of caution by delaying the event.
Last year, Shanghai Fashion Week was one of the first major fashion shows to shift to a virtual platform in light of the pandemic. The event was exclusively livestreamed on Tmall, Alibaba’s top e-commerce platform. However, in October, the 18th edition of the fashion week returned to its traditional physical format, featuring live runway shows and in-person attendance.
Since the start of the year, China has recorded over 100 new cases of Covid-19, with the more contagious UK variant of the virus detected in Beijing and other regions. Given these developments, event organizers have prioritized the safety and health of participants, leading to the decision to postpone Shanghai Fashion Week.
