Shang Xia’s Debut in Paris: A Fusion of East and West

Shang Xia, the Chinese luxury brand, made its highly anticipated debut in Paris with its Spring/Summer 2022 collection. The collection, presented by renowned designer Yang Li, showcased a fusion of East and West influences in a vibrant and captivating display of high-color designs. The significance of this collection goes beyond the fashion itself, as it marks the brand’s first collection since its acquisition by Exor, the investment vehicle of the Agnelli family.

Born in Beijing but raised in Australia, Yang Li took bold risks with his designs, incorporating rich and bright hues such as shocking pink, sunset orange, and Yves Klein blue. The precision tailoring was evident throughout the collection, with standout pieces like a silver pony skin double-breasted redingote, worn with the collar up. Li also showcased grand volumes, including multiple down coats with flat fronts, flared puffers, and a felt blazer with lime sleeves.

Li aimed to create a bridge between East and West, modern and traditional, and the digital and physical arenas. He sees Shang Xia as a platform that circulates contrasts—a portal between different worlds. This philosophy is reflected in the collection, where traditional Chinese craftsmanship meets innovative designs. The choice of models was well-considered, although some appeared to be worn out after a month of continuous fashion shows.

In addition to the stunning clothing, Li also presented a new series of footwear and accessories. The Absolute Triangle bag, with its precise cuts symbolizing absolute purity in Chinese culture, was a striking accessory. Li’s vision for Shang Xia extends beyond fashion, with the aim of showcasing the creative potential of Chinese luxury and positioning the brand as a leading force in the industry.

Despite the term “BRIC” (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) being coined two decades ago, no champion designer from these nations has emerged. However, Yang Li’s remarkable showcase at Shang Xia’s debut in Paris may change that narrative and open doors for more designers from these countries to gain recognition in the fashion world.

The debut show attracted notable figures in the industry, highlighting the significance of this collection. John Elkann, CEO of Exor and leader of the Agnelli clan, oversaw the launch of Ferrari’s fashion line earlier this year and attended the show. Pierre Alexis Dumas, the artistic director of Hermès, also showed his support for the new direction of Shang Xia.

As Shang Xia establishes itself as a Chinese luxury brand, there is high anticipation for its future collections. The success of its debut collection has solidified its position as a powerful contender in the luxury fashion industry. With Shang Xia’s presence making waves at international fashion events, the brand is set to continue creating buzz and cement its place as a force to be reckoned with.
