Selfridges’ Sustainability Commitment

Selfridges is taking significant steps towards enhancing its commitment to sustainability by introducing new labels and a broader range of products. The luxury department store recently unveiled a series of new labelling categories in the realms of fashion, beauty, and interiors. These labels include Responsible Leather, Vegan, Reducing Waste, Forest-Friendly, and Cruelty-Free, showcasing their dedication to offering eco-friendly options.

This initiative represents an expansion of Selfridges’ existing Better Buying scheme, which now includes over 3,000 products from more than 100 brands meeting sustainability criteria. Renowned brands such as Stella McCartney, Ganni, and Calvin Klein, as well as up-and-coming labels like Yuzefi and Phine Jewellery, are prominently featured in this updated sustainability edit.

Within the Responsible Leather category, brands like Yuzefi are recognized for their ethical sourcing practices, while Phine Jewellery stands out for their use of recycled silver to minimize waste. Forest-Friendly brands like Samsoe & Samsoe, as well as Vegan/Cruelty-Free brands such as Doers of London and Milk Makeup, are also part of this curated selection.

The primary goal of this expansion is to offer customers increased transparency when seeking out environmentally-friendly products. Selfridges aims to simplify the process of identifying items with specific sustainable attributes, catering to the rising demand for eco-conscious options amongst consumers.

Through close collaboration with their wholesale partners, Selfridges can pinpoint products that align with their sustainability objectives. Daniella Vega, the sustainability director at Selfridges, underscores the significance of providing customers with comprehensive information about their purchases, as consumers are increasingly prioritizing the sustainability credentials of the brands they endorse.

Research commissioned by the retailer has shown that the majority of UK consumers expect luxury retailers to take the lead in sustainability endeavors. With 64% of consumers seeking cruelty-free products and 72% endeavoring to reduce waste, the new labelling approach and expanded product range from Selfridges respond adeptly to the evolving preferences of conscientious shoppers.
