Selfridges Introduces Spider-Man 60th Anniversary Pop-Up and Superfutures Exhibition

Selfridges, the renowned department store giant, is buzzing with excitement this July as it introduces a range of pop-ups and a major exhibition. One of the highlights is the new Spider-Man 60th anniversary pop-up, a collaboration with Marvel and Kith that features a special collection in honor of the beloved superhero’s milestone. The Kith collection at Selfridges pays tribute to Spider-Man’s evolution over the past six decades, offering a wide range of clothing and accessories inspired by the character. This collaboration extends beyond London, as Kith and Marvel have also opened a pop-up in Queens, New York, and are carrying the collection in most of their stores.

The Spider-Man pop-up at Selfridges includes a captivating installation showcasing 60 years of archival artwork, as well as a clothing collection for both adults and kids. The collection features various pieces such as intarsia knit sweaters, hoodies, and vintage washed T-shirts. Customers can also find accessories like skateboard decks, posters, and hats to complement their outfits. As an added treat, there is a special edition comic book included, featuring an original storyline and previews of Kith products. You can find the pop-up on the men’s floor of the London flagship store.

However, Selfridges’ focus extends beyond nostalgia. The retailer has also launched an engaging exhibition called Superfutures: Visions For The Future. This exhibition invites visitors to stretch their imaginations and explore what the future might hold in terms of our lifestyles, appearance, behavior, and overall experience. Selfridges has partnered with artists, thinkers, and brands who envision a future that is hybrid and fluid, where opposites attract.

Guest curator Agnes Gryczkowska describes the exhibition as a blurring of boundaries between human and machine, organic and crafted, nature and culture, physical and virtual, young and old. The exhibition challenges established ideals of beauty and body, while also questioning traditional methods of production, consumption, and energy sources. A highlight of the exhibition is Gentle Monster’s installation, The Giant, a large kinetic object that captivates viewers with its hyperrealistic movements and expressions. Standing at a whopping nine feet tall, the pale face creates an eerie sense of a living ego, prompting viewers to confront the blurred line between dreams and reality.

Superfutures: Visions For The Future will be open until October 16th, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the intriguing concepts and imaginative possibilities offered by the exhibition. With both the Spider-Man 60th anniversary pop-up and the Superfutures exhibition, Selfridges is demonstrating its dedication to providing customers with unique and captivating experiences that celebrate the past while embracing the future.
