Schiaparelli Makes its Foray into Retail with Opening of First Monobrand Boutique

Schiaparelli, the renowned Parisian couture house owned by Tod’s Group boss Diego Della Valle, is making its foray into the retail sector with the opening of its first monobrand boutique. Situated in the prestigious Bergdorf Goodman department store on New York’s Fifth Avenue, the boutique will be located on the fourth floor and will showcase Schiaparelli’s ready-to-wear collection, which includes a range of suits, knitwear, coats, dresses, accessories, and leather goods. Additionally, the store will feature an exclusive line of evening gowns designed specifically for Bergdorf Goodman, inspired by Schiaparelli’s haute couture collection.

The US market holds great significance for Schiaparelli, as it represents the largest market for the couture house. Both the CEO, Delphine Bellini, and the current creative director, Daniel Roseberry, hail from America, further underscoring the brand’s connection to the country. Moreover, there is a long-standing history between Schiaparelli and Bergdorf Goodman. The department store had been selling Elsa Schiaparelli’s collections from 1931 to 1954, until the closure of her house. It also served as Schiaparelli’s first commercial partner when the brand launched its ready-to-wear line in 2018.

While the label had previously organized pop-up events at Bergdorf Goodman, this will be Schiaparelli’s first permanent retail location outside of its “Salons Boutique” in Paris’ Place Vendôme, where the brand was founded and still maintains its headquarters. This move represents a significant step in the brand’s relaunch strategy, as they have been cautious in expanding their retail presence thus far. In 2006, Diego Della Valle acquired the Schiaparelli archives and brand rights, reviving the legendary label in 2012. The focus initially was on couture, and later expanded into accessories and a prêt-à-porter line, which can be considered unique and luxurious due to its distinctiveness and price point.

Under the creative direction of Daniel Roseberry since 2019, Schiaparelli has effectively brought a modern twist to the brand while remaining loyal to Elsa Schiaparelli’s playful, quirky, and innovative spirit. Roseberry’s original and flamboyant designs have injected new life into the label. In a statement, he expressed their mission to create an alternative couture house, with their luxury ready-to-wear line playing a crucial role in achieving that objective. By offering ready-to-wear pieces, Schiaparelli aims to strike a harmonious balance between the imaginative narrative of couture and commercial appeal.

Designed by Daniel Roseberry in collaboration with architect Daniel Romualdez, Schiaparelli’s first American boutique draws inspiration from the original decor found in Elsa Schiaparelli’s salons on the iconic Place Vendôme. These salons were the result of her creative partnerships with renowned artists Jean-Michel Franck and Alberto Giacometti. To celebrate the store’s opening on October 12, three special window displays will adorn Fifth Avenue at Bergdorf Goodman. This momentous occasion signifies a new chapter for Schiaparelli as it embarks on its retail venture, further solidifying its position in the international fashion landscape.
