Santoni Launches ThePluto Bag and Expands into Handbag Market

Italian luxury footwear brand, Santoni, recently celebrated the launch of its new handbag division by introducing ThePluto bag in New York. The family-run business, which has been operating for nearly 50 years, is now expanding its offerings to include high-quality handbags. To commemorate this milestone, Giuseppe Santoni, the chairman and executive president who grew up in the business, hosted an extravagant Italian dinner at Arva, located atop the Aman Hotel on 57th Street.

During the event, Santoni spoke about the brand’s significance in New York and the launch of ThePluto bag. He revealed that when Santoni first unveiled its line of luxury leather shoes, they were deemed too expensive for the Italian market, even though their prices were lower than other well-known brands like Ferragamo and Gucci. However, the brand found success in New York and the U.S. market, initially selling their shoes out of suitcases in hotel rooms.

Santoni explained that over time, the New York market became crucial for the brand’s retail presence. They initially opened their first store on upper Madison at 70th Street in 1997 before relocating to their current location at 625 Madison at 58th Street approximately seven years ago. Santoni now plans to expand its retail presence in Las Vegas and Beverly Hills while exploring further distribution opportunities in the U.S. market, particularly for their women’s offerings.

ThePluto bag, priced at $2,650.00, features a modern, asymmetrical shape and is meticulously handcrafted on a wood frame. Santoni described the bag as both stylish and comfortable for the modern woman, incorporating a combination of technique and practical functionality into its design. The bag is well-thought-out in terms of size, providing ample storage without being too bulky. The straps are adjustable and can function as a shoulder strap or a short handle.

During the launch event in New York, models Martha Hunt and prominent stylist Kate Young showcased ThePluto bag, further accentuating its modern appeal. Santoni revealed that the flap design of the bag was inspired by their men’s brogue double-strap design, resembling the ears of Disney character Pluto. He added that the brand will continue to develop the bag and expand its handbag business while retaining the signature flap design.

Santoni’s passion for shoemaking began at a young age, with his involvement in the company starting at 14. He continued to learn the craft until he became CEO in his early twenties. He emphasized the brand’s dedication to craftsmanship and comfort, particularly in the arch and last construction of their shoes. Reflecting this commitment, Santoni’s headquarters in Corridonia, Italy, currently employs 700 residents out of the town’s 8,000 population.

In conclusion, the introduction of ThePluto bag signifies a new phase for Santoni as they venture into the handbag market. With a focus on craftsmanship, comfort, and timeless luxury, the brand aims to create products that provide consumers with a sense of well-being and represent exceptional quality. Santoni’s enduring success in the Italian and U.S. markets, coupled with their plans for expansion, solidify their position among the elite luxury footwear brands in the industry.
