Salone del Mobile: Fashion and Luxury Take Center Stage

The Salone del Mobile fair is making a triumphant return to Milan, promising a week full of luxury and fashion. After being canceled in 2020 and having a restricted edition in 2021, this year’s event is gearing up to be bigger and better than ever. Both the official trade show at FieraMilano City pavilions and the “off” show, FuoriSalone, will be hosting a myriad of events throughout the city.

Fashion and luxury houses are taking center stage at the fair, with many planning multiple launches, presentations, and immersive experiences. Louis Vuitton is especially noteworthy as they celebrate the ten-year anniversary of their Objets Nomades collection. They will occupy the vast Garage Traversi for this special occasion. Another iconic brand, Hermès, will return to La Pelota, a historic site that has been showcasing their collections since 2019.

Italian fashion giants like Giorgio Armani, Versace, Fendi, Missoni, Roberto Cavalli, and Diesel are also joining in and will unveil their own special installations. Prada is going beyond traditional exhibitions and is organizing a multidisciplinary symposium called “Prada Frames On Forest.” This event will delve into discussions about forest ecosystems, design, and the constructed atmosphere. Timberland, known for their outdoor-inspired products, will surprise visitors with a floating forest in the Tortona district. Even Gucci is jumping on the bandwagon and launching a pop-up collaboration with Adidas.

The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the homeware sector cannot be ignored. The repeated lockdowns led to an increased demand for home furnishings, resulting in remarkable growth for the luxury furniture industry in Italy. In 2021 alone, the industry experienced an impressive 11% increase, reaching a total value of 26 billion euros. According to a recent report by Bain & Company, the global design market is valued at a staggering 45 billion euros.

Interestingly, it’s not just the big luxury houses that are capitalizing on the homeware trend. Smaller brands are also entering the booming market. Dolce & Gabbana has recently launched a line of home accessories, while Dsquared2 has collaborated with Londonart to create a collection of fashionable wallpapers. Other brands such as Arthur Arbesser and Jacob Cohën have also joined forces with furniture manufacturers to produce unique and stylish pieces.

Jewelers have also recognized the potential of this fusion between fashion and interior design. They are partnering with porcelain makers to create stunning tabletop art. Swarovski has collaborated with German company Rosenthal, and Buccellati has teamed up with Ginori 1735 to create exquisite pieces.

This integration of fashion and interior design has proven to be mutually beneficial for both industries. Fashion brands have realized that the Salone del Mobile offers a vibrant platform for communication and engagement with their audience. This connection with recipients and communities has been invaluable for the fashion industry, which traditionally seeks exclusivity and high sales volumes.
