Saint Laurent’s Winter 2021 Collection: Where the Silver Wind Blows

Saint Laurent’s winter 2021 collection, designed by Anthony Vaccarello, made a bold statement with its captivating show video titled “Where the Silver Wind Blows.” Filmed against stunning northern hemisphere landscapes, the video showcased a group of confident models striding through rugged terrains while wearing daring outfits amidst ominous gray skies.

The show began with models sporting liquid metal tanks in silver or gold, paired with bouclé wool skirts and jackets in striking shades like cerulean blue and black sequins. Despite the challenging surroundings, Vaccarello fearlessly incorporated micro mini-skirts adorned with real fur trims, as well as pocketed minis so short they resembled hotpants. The models gracefully maneuvered through volcanic terrains, waded through river shallows beneath crashing waterfalls, and elegantly walked across vast pale green tundras. This visually stunning backdrop included frost-kissed beauties donning Cossack chakras and thigh-high boots, strolling alongside black slate shorelines and cobalt blue icebergs.

The collection also showcased crisp greatcoats, white chiffon tuxedo shirts, chainmail bras, and a standout combination of a four-pocket biker jacket and leather pants paired with a white satin blouse. However, certain pieces, like an all-red four-pocket jacket, bore resemblance to Chanel designs, raising concerns about potential legal issues.

The show video, directed by Nathalie Canguilhem, executed flawlessly, showcasing one of the most memorable presentations in the fashion industry’s digital era due to the pandemic. The video was further enriched by the fresh casting, enhancing its overall artistic appeal. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Icelandic tourist agency recognized the video for its captivating portrayal of the country’s picturesque landscapes.

In his program note, Vaccarello expressed his aspiration to challenge Saint Laurent’s traditional bourgeois aesthetic by incorporating influences from Canadian rocker and visual artist Peaches, celebrated for her progressive themes surrounding gender identity.

In addition to clothing, Vaccarello has successfully established a significant accessories business at Saint Laurent. This season’s footwear included new high heels with golden chain-covered heels and toes, appealing to fans of the brand’s bold and attention-grabbing accessories. Vaccarello remains true to the brand’s tradition of daring costume jewelry, a legacy initiated by Yves Saint Laurent’s design assistant, Loulou de la Falaise. The collection featured bohemian Byzantine earrings, brooches, clover-shaped pendants, and micro crystal belts.

Vaccarello’s ability to confidently establish his aesthetic and push boundaries aligns perfectly with the spirit of Yves Saint Laurent himself. The winter 2021 collection serves as a testament to Vaccarello’s fearlessness and his commitment to carrying forward the brand’s legacy while infusing it with a modern twist.
