Rondini and K.Jacques: Artisanal Sandal Brands of the French Riviera

Summer is in full swing and tourists flock to the French Riviera in search of the perfect combination of sun, beach, and relaxation. However, amidst the pursuit of leisure, fashion still plays a significant role for both French and foreign vacationers. When it comes to footwear, two brands stand out among Saint Tropez aficionados: Rondini and K.Jacques.

What sets these two artisanal sandal brands apart is not only their expertise but also their ties to the region. Both brands originated from the Bay and have remained there ever since. Rondini, known for its Tropéziennes sandals since 1927, was founded by Dominique Rondini. The brand initially made a name for itself with its classic Tropéziennes, but later expanded its range with the involvement of Serge Rondini, Dominique’s son, and eventually, Alain Rondini.

For over 90 years, Rondini has maintained an on-site workshop attached to its boutique. Sandal enthusiasts from around the world visit to experience the quality, flexibility, and professionalism that the brand is renowned for. As an interesting anecdote, one of Rondini’s first customers was the acclaimed writer Colette.

Under the leadership of Alain Rondini, who now heads the brand that has been passed down through generations, a touch of modernity has been introduced through the use of colored leathers, python, crocodile, and other exotic skins. Nevertheless, Rondini’s legacy remains intact with its commitment to tailor-made, handmade sandals created on-site.

K.Jacques, a manufacturer since 1933, was founded by Jacques Keklikian and has steadily established itself as a reference in women’s fashion. The family-owned company continuously strives to preserve the essence instilled by Jacques when he designed the first models of the iconic Tropéziennes sandals.

The brand has achieved remarkable success globally, producing nearly 50,000 pairs each year, with 60% of them sold for export, predominantly to the United States. The durability of leathers sourced from Aveyron, Italy, and Spain ensures that these models travel across borders, having adorned the feet of numerous celebrities like Jessica Alba, Marion Cotillard, Sophie Marceau, and many others.

Both Rondini and K.Jacques share a common thread in their commitment to precise craftsmanship and the customization of tailor-made models. Additionally, the artisanal and family-oriented spirit that permeates both brands cannot be overlooked. However, each brand has carved out its own loyal customer base, thus solidifying their status as symbols of French savoir-faire on a global scale.
