Resurgence of Formality: Fashion Trends in the Post-Pandemic Era

Formality is making a resurgence in the fashion industry as consumers transition back to social events and office working in the post-pandemic era. The emphasis on comfort that dominated the clothing market during the lockdown is now giving way to a demand for stylish and formal attire. This shift in consumer behavior is evident in the latest report from John Lewis, which delves into the fashion trends of 2022.

One notable change in consumer preferences is the decline in sales of non-wired bras, which had experienced a surge in popularity in recent years. These bras have seen a decrease of one-third in sales over the past year. On the other hand, wired bras have seen a 45% increase in sales, and shareware sales have tripled, with Kim Kardashian’s Skims line leading the way. An interesting observation is that John Lewis has received over 4,900 requests for lingerie fittings since January, indicating a shift towards more supportive and structured undergarments.

In addition to changes in underwear preferences, there has been a significant rise in sales of occasion hats, which have increased by a staggering 168%. This surge is attributed to consumers celebrating special events, such as weddings. In fact, one in five people attended a wedding, and searches for “wedding” on the John Lewis website skyrocketed by a staggering 21,000%. Conversely, velour tracksuit sales have halved, as consumers are no longer lounging around and are instead opting for more formal attire. John Lewis suggests that consumers are putting more thought into their outfits this year, as evidenced by the decline in velour tracksuit sales.

The influence of the popular TV series Bridgerton continues to impact fashion trends. Sales of corsets have increased by 20%, and searches for silk dresses have multiplied by six. Mini bags have also experienced a surge in demand, with sales increasing by 50%, while pearl necklaces have gained a 15% increase in popularity.

However, not all fashion trends in 2022 revolve around extreme formality. Ugg sales have experienced exponential growth, and sales of boyfriend jeans have risen by 85%. These trends reflect a desire for comfort and departing from loungewear, without reverting to the restrictive nature of skinny jeans. The release of the new Barbie film, featuring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has sparked a trend dubbed “Barbiecore,” bringing the color pink into the spotlight. Pink fashion products have seen a 22% increase in sales, and sales of pink lipstick have soared by 83%.

Overall, consumers’ clothing choices in 2022 reflect the hybrid lifestyles that many now lead. As people find a new rhythm in their lives, switching between home and office environments, their fashion choices adapt accordingly. Comfortable classics are worn at home on Mondays and Fridays, while blazers are thrown on to create an office-ready look on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. John Lewis explains that this shift in clothing preferences is a result of the changing dynamics of modern life.

With the return of formality in fashion and the continued influence of popular culture, it is evident that consumers are seeking a balance between comfort and style in their wardrobe choices. As we navigate the post-pandemic world, fashion will continue to evolve alongside our changing needs and desires.
