Renowned French Fashion Designer Thierry Mugler Passes Away

French fashion designer Thierry Mugler, renowned for his avant-garde designs and extravagant style, has sadly passed away at the age of 73. The news of his death was announced by his eponymous brand, which was acquired by L’Oréal in 2020, as well as his personal Instagram account.

Born in Strasbourg in 1948, Mugler first launched his fashion brand Café de Paris in 1973 before establishing his own self-named label a year later. He quickly made a name for himself in the industry with his daring and futuristic silhouettes, known for their theatrical flair.

In the early 1990s, Mugler expanded his creative endeavors and delved into the world of perfumery. He created several highly successful fragrances, including the iconic Angel and A*Men, which became instant bestsellers.

Aside from his work in fashion and perfume, Mugler also left his mark in the realm of stage productions. In 1985, he designed the costumes for the play “MacBetch” at the prestigious Comédie Française. Additionally, he launched his own revue called Mugler Follies in late 2013.

Despite his immense success, Mugler decided to step away from the fashion industry after his fashion house was acquired by Clarins in 1997, and later by L’Oréal’s Luxury division two years ago. However, he made a surprise comeback last year to attend the opening of his retrospective exhibition “Couturissime” at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. The exhibition, showcasing his remarkable career, will be on display until April 24.

According to Jean-Baptiste Rougeot, press attaché for Thierry Mugler, the designer’s death was unexpected and resulted from natural causes. Despite his passing, Mugler was actively working on several projects and was expected to announce new collaborations in the near future.

In honor of Thierry Mugler’s extraordinary contributions to the world of fashion and perfumery, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs is currently hosting a major exhibition dedicated to his remarkable career.
