Renowned fashion designer Riccardo Tisci collaborates with Marina Abramović for 7 Deaths of Maria Callas

Renowned fashion designer Riccardo Tisci, Burberry’s Chief Creative Officer, has embarked on a remarkable collaboration with performance artist Marina Abramović for her latest project, 7 Deaths of Maria Callas. This innovative opera project, a collaboration with composer Marko Nikodijević, draws inspiration from iconic operas to narrate the dramatic story of Maria Callas, the legendary soprano.

Tisci’s creative genius shines through as he designs costumes that perfectly capture the essence of each opera scene in 7 Deaths of Maria Callas. From a striking red oversized crepe Toledo jacket for Carmen to a pearl satin gown with floral motifs for Lucia di Lammermoor, Tisci’s creations elevate the visual storytelling of the performance.

Apart from costume design, Abramović will be taking on the role of director for the performance, working closely with actor Willem Dafoe on a film specifically tailored for the world premiere. Following the debut in Munich, the opera project will travel to Berlin, Athens, and Paris, attracting audiences worldwide with its unique blend of opera and performance art.

The collaboration between Abramović and Tisci goes beyond just creative partnership; it reflects a deep friendship and a shared commitment to exploring the theme of love in all its complexities. As Abramović puts it, their collaboration intertwines fashion and art, creating a dialogue of love, respect, and freedom that resonates deeply with audiences.

For those who cannot attend the live premiere in Munich, 7 Deaths of Maria Callas will be livestreamed on Staatsoper.Tv on 5 September 2020, with on-demand viewing available for 30 days starting from 7 September. This groundbreaking performance promises to be a captivating experience, showcasing the intersection of fashion, art, and opera in a truly innovative way.
