Remembering Emanuel Ungaro: A Legacy in Fashion

French fashion designer Emanuel Ungaro, who founded the renowned couture house that bears his name, passed away in Paris on Saturday, December 21st. Born in Aix-en-Provence in 1933, Ungaro started his career by collaborating with Cristobal Balenciaga and Courrèges before eventually launching his own label in 1965. Known for his sensory and obsessive approach to fashion, Ungaro quickly gained recognition in the world of haute couture and expanded his repertoire to include ready-to-wear, debuting a women’s line in 1968 and later introducing a men’s line.

Apart from his clothing collections, Ungaro also delved into the realms of perfume and eyewear. In 1996, the Ferragamo family acquired the Ungaro House. In 2001, Emanuel Ungaro entrusted the artistic direction of his brand to his collaborator Giambattista Valli and retired from the fashion industry three years later, feeling that he no longer aligned with the expectations of modern women.

According to Emanuel Ungaro, “Style reflects a moral stance, and form creates a personal aesthetic. In both cases, it is important to maintain independence of thought and action.” These words encapsulate his unwavering dedication to originality and individual expression.

Although he stepped down from his Maison in 2004, Ungaro’s influence continued to inspire his brand and the wider international fashion community. The official statement released by the fashion house declared that his work will forever be revered as emblematic of allure, boldness, and a deep appreciation for women and their sensuality.

Emanuel Ungaro passed away at the age of 86, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in the fashion world. His contributions to the industry will always be remembered and cherished.
