Remake Fashion Accountability 2022 Report

The Remake Fashion Accountability 2022 report has been released by an international organization focused on CSR commitments in the fashion industry. The report specifically examines the most environmentally and socially responsible luxury firms and fashion houses. Burberry, a leading luxury brand, received a score of 38 out of 150 points.

Collaborating with labor rights organizations, opinion leaders, and sector experts, the 2022 Remake study evaluated a total of 58 fashion companies, including fast fashion, luxury, and retail brands, all with annual revenues over $100 million. This year has been a mix of positive change and concerning practices in the fashion industry.

Remake aims to create a detailed ranking of the most committed fashion companies using six criteria, totaling 150 points. These criteria include traceability, wages and well-being, business practices, raw materials, environmental justice, and governance.

The average score among the evaluated companies was only 14 out of 150. However, Burberry surpassed this average with a score of 38 points, primarily due to its strong performance in environmental justice and governance. The fashion house has shown dedication to sustainability by securing a sustainable loan of £300 million and setting a goal to become Climate Positive by 2040. Burberry is also working towards using 100% traceable key materials by 2025 and has partnered with My Wardrobe HQ for rental and resale initiatives. Notably, Burberry is one of the 17 companies in the report that sought feedback on their score to improve their performance.

Ralph Lauren, known for its efforts in gender equality, ranked 10th with a total score of 25 points. Hermès, Kering, and PVH followed closely behind, securing 15th to 17th place with 20 points each. Luxury leader LVMH, which includes brands like Dior, Louis Vuitton, and Fendi, landed in 31st position with 11 points. Chanel joined the rankings at the 39th spot with 8 points.

The report also recognized a few smaller “ethical and sustainable” fashion brands, including Ganni. In November, Ganni made headlines for supporting Bolt Threads’ “Greener Pastures Pledge” campaign, which promotes its sustainable Mylo textile.
