Reimagining the Palais Garnier: Collaborative Artwork to Grace the Façade

Reimagining the Palais Garnier: Collaborative Artwork to Grace the Façade

The Palais Garnier, one of the most iconic landmarks in Paris, is set to undergo a transformation like never before. Championed by Chanel and its subsidiary Paraffection, the interdisciplinary space 19M has launched an ambitious artistic project that invites the public to participate in creating a collaborative artwork that will adorn the façade of the Palais Garnier by the end of the year.

The project, spearheaded by renowned artist JR, takes the idea of scaffolding and elevates it to the status of artwork. In a unique collaboration between the Opéra national de Paris and JR, a trompe-l’oeil photographic collage titled “L’entrée de la caverne” (The Entrance to the Cave) has already been affixed to the south façade of the building, captivating passersby since early September.

However, this is only the beginning of the artistic journey. JR is already working on the second act of this installation, aiming to create another version of the cave, a more interior experience that will be installed on the Palais Garnier’s façade in November.

To bring this vision to life, JR has partnered with 19M, the creative hub that houses Paraffection, Chanel’s subsidiary dedicated to the Métiers d’art. From now until October 15, the general public is encouraged to take part in creating the artwork titled “Mano Habilis.” Participants will create a handprint and then decorate it with embroidery, guided by experts from Maison Atelier Montex and other skilled artisans.

These unique workshops, which are free and open to individuals aged 8 and above, provide an opportunity for participants to engage in the artistic process. The sessions last approximately one hour and take place in a temporary space located adjacent to 19M, between Aubervilliers and Paris. As a token of their participation, participants will receive their embroidered handprint as well as a black and white portrait captured from one of JR’s larger-than-life photo booths.

The creations made during the workshops will be digitized and integrated into the final artwork. Through this collaborative effort, individuals from all walks of life can contribute to a project that will leave a lasting impact on the Palais Garnier.

As the Grand Mécène (Great Patron) of the Opéra national de Paris, Chanel’s support for this project is instrumental in making it a reality. The first embroidery sessions are already fully booked but fear not, new reservation slots will be made available on September 25 on the 19M website, ensuring that more individuals can participate in this exceptional artistic endeavor.
