Recent Trends that Shaped the Fashion Industry

What are the recent trends that have shaped the fashion industry? In its Year In Fashion report, Lyst, a specialized search engine that recently caught the attention of the LVMH group, takes a look back at the key highlights of 2018 based on its data and monitoring of Instagram mentions.

One trend that has made a strong comeback is LogoMania. Influenced by the revival of the 90s, logos have taken over the internet. This trend has not only dominated sportswear, with brands like Fila, Kappa, and Champion being highly visible, but it has also found resonance among premium brands. In 2018, we saw Céline dropping its accent, Burberry bidding farewell to its equestrian knight logo, and Balmain introducing a new monogrammed “B”. Logos were the talk of the town, whether it was to appeal to a younger audience or to generate buzz. Searches related to logos were the most popular on Lyst and Instagram, with Supreme leading the luxury searches, followed by Prada, Fendi, Gucci, Versace, Louis Vuitton, and Céline.

When it comes to accessories, the most coveted “it” product of 2018 on Instagram was Gucci’s double G belt, with over half a million searches. The Off-White “Industrial” belt also gained immense popularity. Fendi’s monogrammed tights, popularized by Kim Kardashian, came in third. Other notable accessories in the ranking included a printed Chloé suit, sports socks, Prada flame heel shoes, and Saint Laurent’s Loulou sunglasses. 2018 was definitely the year of accessorizing!

In terms of shoes, Balenciaga’s Triple S sneakers, which have become iconic for the Dad Shoes trend, topped Lyst’s ranking. The Top 10 also featured Gucci’s GG Bloom Supreme sandals, Saint Laurent’s Opyum pumps, Prada’s Flame Heels, and Balenciaga’s enigmatic platform Crocs.

When it comes to handbags, Gucci’s GG Marmont belt bag captured the attention of fashionistas, with a search for it happening every six seconds. It was closely followed by the new version of Dior’s Saddle Bag and Balenciaga’s geometric Triangle Duffle Bag.

Lyst also highlighted some unexpected items of 2018 that caused a frenzy in searches. These included Fendi’s highly provocative scarf, Versace’s denim boots, Gucci’s balaclava, Jacquemus’ oversized hat, and the beheaded mannequin heads at Gucci’s Fall/Winter 2018 runway show, which piqued the curiosity of audiences.

Interestingly, there were also significant moments in 2018 that prompted users of Lyst and Instagram to perform searches. The appointment of Virgil Abloh as the head of Louis Vuitton’s Men’s Collections, Meghan Markle’s Givenchy wedding dress, and Chiara Ferragni’s Dior wedding dress were among the highlights that captivated the fashion industry.
